When the Heart Is Quiet Enough to Listen
A Lenten Reflection on Inner Stillness
Scripture
Psalm 46:10
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Reflection
Lent invites us into a sacred slowing.
Not just physically — but emotionally and spiritually.
So often our hearts are filled with noise:
responsibilities, conversations, worries, opinions, expectations, and endless thoughts about what must happen next.
Even when we pray, we sometimes come to God with a full agenda.
But Scripture gently reminds us that transformation often begins in stillness.
“Be still.”
This is not simply a command to stop moving.
It is an invitation to quiet the inner world of the heart.
Stillness allows us to notice what is really happening within us.
Our fears.
Our longings.
Our disappointments.
Our hopes.
When we pause long enough to acknowledge these emotions before God, something beautiful happens: the heart begins to align with truth.
This is where emotional intelligence and faith meet.
Instead of reacting to every feeling or suppressing what we experience, we bring our inner world honestly before the Lord.
And in that sacred pause, we remember something powerful:
God is already present.
He is not waiting for us to fix ourselves before approaching Him.
He meets us in the quiet places of surrender.
During this Lenten season, stillness becomes a spiritual practice that allows us to release control, listen deeply, and realign our hearts with God’s presence.
The RRR Method
This simple practice is part of the RRR Method: Reflect · Renew · Respond, a framework designed to help integrate faith and emotional awareness in everyday life.
A Faith + EQ Practice
Reflect
What emotions have been filling your mind or heart recently?
Are there worries, frustrations, or pressures that have been creating inner noise?
Pause and bring those honestly before God.
Renew
Ask God to replace inner noise with His truth.
Remember that His presence is not dependent on perfect circumstances.
Stillness allows the heart to reconnect with what is eternal.
Respond
Create a small moment of stillness today.
Turn off distractions.
Sit quietly with God for a few minutes.
Breathe slowly and invite His peace to settle your heart.
Even a brief pause can create space for clarity, peace, and renewed trust.
Prayer
Lord,
Teach my heart the gift of stillness.
Quiet the noise within me and help me become aware of Your presence.
Where my thoughts are restless, bring peace.
Where my emotions are unsettled, bring truth.
Help me learn to pause, listen, and trust that You are working even when I cannot see the whole picture.
In the quiet moments, draw me closer to You.
Amen.
