Flourishing in the Waiting

Trusting God, staying present, and listening for His direction in the in-between

“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” — Psalm 37:7

There are seasons when God seems to move quickly.

Doors open. Answers come. The next step becomes clear almost before we have time to ask the question.

And then there are seasons like this one.

Seasons when we know God is working, but we can't quite see where everything is leading yet.

I find myself still in a season of trusting.

Trusting what God has already shown me. Trusting that He is working in circumstances I cannot see. Trusting that the ideas, promptings, conversations, and opportunities that seem to arrive at just the right moment are not insignificant.

And at the same time, I'm learning patience.

Not the kind of patience that simply sits and waits for something to happen, but the kind that keeps showing up faithfully while allowing God to determine the timing.

Waiting Doesn't Mean Standing Still

One of the things I'm beginning to understand is that waiting on God doesn't necessarily mean doing nothing.

Sometimes waiting looks like preparing.

Sometimes it looks like learning.

Sometimes it looks like making the best decision we can with what we know today.

Sometimes it means continuing to work, create, pray, listen, and take the next small step without knowing exactly where the path will lead.

There is a difference between forcing something to happen and faithfully participating in what God is already doing.

I'm learning to recognize that difference.

When I begin feeling anxious about what comes next, I can easily move into striving. I want answers. I want certainty. I want to know how everything will work out.

But the Holy Spirit continues to draw me back to something simpler:

Be present here.

Not six months from now.

Not in the outcome I'm hoping for.

Not in every possible scenario my mind can create.

Here.

Today.

Staying in Tune With the Holy Spirit

I have also been paying closer attention to the quiet ways God leads.

Sometimes it is a thought that keeps returning.

Sometimes it is something I hear in a sermon or podcast.

Sometimes a conversation gives me clarity about something I've been praying over.

Sometimes I simply feel peace about one direction and uneasiness about another.

Discernment doesn't always arrive dramatically.

Often, it grows as we remain close to God.

Jesus said:

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” — John 16:13

That word guide matters to me.

A guide doesn't necessarily reveal the entire journey at once.

A guide shows us where to place our feet next.

And perhaps that is one of the greatest lessons of this season for me: I don't need the entire map to take the next faithful step.

Patience Is Part of the Preparation

We often think of patience as something required because God hasn't answered yet.

But what if patience is actually part of the answer?

What if something is being developed in us while we wait?

Trust.

Wisdom.

Discernment.

Emotional maturity.

Dependence on God.

The ability to recognize His voice without needing immediate evidence that everything is going to work out.

There are things God may want to give us, but there are also things God wants to grow within us.

And perhaps some things cannot be hurried because the preparation matters just as much as the destination.

Flourishing Can Happen Before the Harvest

Summer naturally makes me think about flourishing—growth, abundance, fruit, and harvest.

But I'm discovering that flourishing doesn't always look like visible results.

Sometimes flourishing looks like deeper roots.

Sometimes it looks like peace where anxiety once lived.

Sometimes it is choosing trust instead of trying to control the outcome.

Sometimes it is becoming more aware of God's presence in ordinary moments.

Sometimes it is simply being able to say:

God, I don't know exactly what You're doing, but I trust You enough to stay close.

That is growth too.

Maybe even some of the most important growth.

A Gentle Invitation

If you are also in an in-between season, perhaps you don't need to figure everything out today.

Instead, consider asking:

What is God asking me to be present to right now?

Where am I being invited to trust instead of strive?

What quiet prompting have I been sensing that deserves my attention?

What is one faithful step I can take today while leaving the outcome with God?

There is grace in not knowing everything yet.

There is purpose in preparation.

There is growth happening beneath the surface.

And there is a God who already knows where the path leads.

We can keep listening.

We can keep moving when He says move.

We can stay when He says stay.

And while we wait, we can still flourish.

A Closing Prayer

Father,

Thank You for being present in the seasons when the path ahead is clear and in the seasons when I can only see the next step.

Help me resist the urge to rush ahead of You or force an answer before its time.

Quiet the noise around me and within me so I can recognize the gentle prompting of Your Spirit.

Give me wisdom to know when to move, patience to know when to wait, and courage to trust You when I cannot yet see what You are doing.

Teach me to be fully present in the life You have given me today.

And remind me that even in the waiting, You are working.

My life is still growing.

My faith is still deepening.

And by Your grace, I am still flourishing.

Amen.

Rooted in truth. Refined by grace. Led by love.
