Esther: Courage, Discernment, and the Power of Wise Influence
Women of the Bible + Emotional Intelligence
Sometimes courage does not look like bold action.
Sometimes it looks like quiet discernment.
A pause.
A prayer.
A moment of seeking wisdom before stepping forward.
The story of Esther reveals a powerful example of emotionally intelligent courage — the kind that listens, discerns, and then acts at exactly the right moment.
Her story reminds us that faith-filled leadership is not always loud or dramatic. Often it begins in the quiet space where wisdom, prayer, and courage meet.
Esther’s story is part of a broader exploration in the Women of the Bible + Emotional Intelligence series, where we discover how Scripture reveals timeless wisdom for navigating emotions, relationships, and faith with discernment and grace.
The Story of Esther
Esther was a young Jewish woman living in Persia who became queen to King Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes).
At first glance, her life appears to be one of privilege and opportunity. But beneath the surface, Esther would soon face an impossible situation.
A powerful official named Haman had devised a plan to destroy the Jewish people. When Esther's cousin Mordecai learned of the plot, he urged Esther to approach the king and plead for the lives of her people.
But there was a serious risk.
Approaching the king without being summoned could result in death.
Esther stood at a crossroads — one that required both courage and discernment.
Mordecai reminded her of something profound:
“And who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
— Esther 4:14
Rather than reacting impulsively, Esther responded with wisdom.
She asked the Jewish people to fast and pray for three days.
Only after seeking God did she step forward.
Her approach was thoughtful, strategic, and courageous — a beautiful example of faith-filled emotional intelligence in action.

Emotional Intelligence in Esther's Story
Esther's actions reveal several powerful qualities of emotional intelligence.
Self-Awareness
Esther understood the gravity of the situation. She did not deny the risk or minimize the danger.
She acknowledged her fear while also recognizing the responsibility placed before her.
Self-awareness allows us to recognize both our emotions and the significance of the moment we are facing.
Self-Regulation
Instead of reacting in panic, Esther slowed down.
She prayed.
She fasted.
She sought clarity.
This pause created space for wisdom and guidance.
Self-regulation allows us to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
Courageous Influence
Esther did not confront the situation with anger or rashness.
She approached the king with humility and wisdom, creating a setting that allowed truth to be revealed at the right moment.
Her influence changed the outcome for an entire nation.
Emotionally intelligent leadership often looks like wise influence rather than force.
What Esther Teaches Us About Faith + EQ
Esther reminds us that courage and wisdom are not opposites.
They often work together.
Faith-centered emotional intelligence invites us to:
• Pause before reacting
• Seek God before acting
• Discern the right moment
• Speak truth with wisdom
• Lead with courage when the moment calls
Many times the opportunities God places before us require both spiritual sensitivity and emotional maturity.
Esther models both beautifully.
Reflect
Consider a moment in your life where you felt called to step forward with courage.
Did you pause and seek wisdom first, or did you react quickly?
How might slowing down create space for deeper discernment in your life right now?
Renew
One of the most powerful practices of emotional intelligence is learning to pause before acting.
Esther's example reminds us that prayer, reflection, and discernment often prepare the heart for courageous action.
Respond
This week, consider where God may be inviting you to act with courage.
Rather than rushing ahead, take time to seek wisdom first.
Ask yourself:
What would wise courage look like in this situation?
You may discover that the pause itself is part of the preparation.
Scripture for Reflection
Esther 4:14
“And who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
This verse reminds us that our lives often hold purpose far beyond what we initially see.
A Glimpse Ahead
Esther’s story reminds us that courage is often expressed through thoughtful discernment and wise timing.
Yet Scripture also gives us another powerful example of emotional wisdom in action.
In the next reflection in the Women of the Bible + Emotional Intelligence series, we will explore the story of Abigail — a woman whose calm discernment and wise response prevented violence and changed the course of events in a moment of intense conflict.
Her story reveals how emotional intelligence can bring peace into situations that seem ready to erupt.
Esther’s story also invites us to cling to hope, however small, and to have confidence that whatever evil might currently reign, the story of God isn’t finished!
